POZ + Sexual: How HIV Positive Gay Men Can Incorporate a Healthy Sexuality

Presenters:  Dr. Alan Downs & Dr. Rick Coons
The Institute for Sexual Health
Beverly Hills, CA
Sunday, December 11, 2011 (2:00pm – 4:00pm)

Incorporating a healthy sexual identity as an HIV positive gay man can be challenging to say the least.  HIV related stigma creates complication with disclosure and also impacts sexual risk taking behaviors.  Persons living with HIV/AIDS have reported experiencing rejection as well as violence upon disclosure of their status.  HIV positive gay men are among the most marginalized groups within our society and may experience multiple layers of stigma due to sexual orientation in addition to their HIV status.  As part of the Institute for Sexual Health’s lectures in clinical sexology, Dr. Alan Downs along with Dr. Rick Coons will present on how HIV positive gay men can experience healthy and satisfying sexual relationships in a highly stigmatizing culture.  Dr. Alan Downs will also read excerpts from the soon to be released and revised edition of his best selling book, The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man’s World.

A New Generation of Sex Addiction Treatment: The Sex Addiction-Induced Trauma Model for the Treatment of Sex Addicts, Partners and the Couple

Presenter:  Dr. Omar Minwalla
The Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health 2011 National Conference
San Diego, California
Saturday, September 24, 2011 (Session Ten: 2:45pm – 4:00pm)

Since 2006, Dr. Minwalla has articulated the particularly alarming lack of recognition and treatment of trauma among partners of sex addicts. He has challenged the “traditional sex addiction model” as patriarchal, narcissistic in scope, and in desperate need of evolution.  Dr. Minwalla will continue to articulate the urgent need for a paradigm shift towards the emerging sex-addiction-induced trauma model and how recognizing sex addiction-induced trauma significantly changes the way the addict, the partner and the couple is conceptualized and treated. The presentation will provide concrete examples of how clinical treatment changes when utilizing a SA-induced trauma model, ushering in a new generation of sex addiction and compulsivity treatment approaches.

Religion, Internet Pornography and Sex Addiction: A discussion of how the Internet bypasses religion’s filters.

Presenter: Dan Drake, MFT, CSAT Candidate 3
The Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health 2011 National Conference
San Diego, California
Friday, September 23, 2011 (Session 4: 9:00AM – 10:15AM)

Religiosity has been demonstrated to protect individuals from engaging in many addictive behaviors, and a relationship to a higher power typically plays a vital role in the successful recovery for those who do exhibit such behaviors. However, even among religious populations internet-based compulsive sexual behaviors proliferate. This presentation will demonstrate from both psychological and 12-step perspectives how religiosity can serve as a protective factor from addictive behaviors in many cases except internet-based compulsive sexual behaviors. Building on current research on the unique interaction between internet-based sexuality and religiosity and the glaring gaps in this research, the case of internet-based compulsive sexual behaviors will be examined and discussed. The integration of vibrant, healthy sexuality in the context of religiosity in the age of cyberspace will be discussed, and implications will be drawn for clinical practice.
